Review: General Grabber AT2 tires
November 29 2011Filed under: land-rover lr2 off-roading
I recently installed General Grabber AT2 tires (255/60R18) on my otherwise mostly stock LR2. I'm generally pleased with them and would recommend the tires to other LR2/Freelander owners.
Pros:
- Handling is great. Can't tell any difference from the passenger tires.
- They've done great in mud, sand, and rocks.
- I've been able to lower them to 10 PSI in sand with no problems.
- They're rated for severe snow (even though they don't have the snowflake symbol). By carrying this statement from the manufacturer I can pass through chain checkpoints in Tahoe without chains.
Cons:
- Fuel economy appears to have dropped from 19MPG to about 17MPG.
- I've already punctured one on its sidewall (going through rocky mud ruts) and have a pretty big gash in another sidewall (trail with a few rocks, must have rubbed one). They're not indestructible.
- Front left tire rubs slightly at extreme turning angles when the ground is not perfectly level. These are the largest I'd go on the stock 18" rims. I don't expect any rubbing after 10-20mm spacers.
- Because of the large stock rim on the LR2 the tires don't benefit from airing down as much as a similar pair on 15" rims would.
